Beet Juice Before Exercise Strengthens The Brain
According to an article published in the Journals of Gerontology: Series A, drinking beetroot juice before exercise can rejuvenate the brain. It turned out that older adults who drank beet juice before moderate exercise had better brain connections related to motor function compared to younger adults.
26 participants over the age of 55 who do not exercise regularly, have high blood pressure, and use two different drugs to lower blood pressure, participated in this study. The subjects participated in 50-minute treadmill exercises 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Half of them were given 560 mg of nitrate-containing beetroot juice supplement before exercise, and at the end of 6 weeks, the brain functions of the participants were measured using MRI.
Adults in the beetroot juice group showed significantly stronger somatomotor cortex. The researchers hypothesized that the somatomotor cortex receives and processes signals from the muscles, that exercise strengthens this process, and that the nitrates in beet juice enhance recovery. Because nitrates turn into nitric oxide, allowing more oxygen to be delivered to the brain.
Researchers say more data needs to be collected with a larger group to learn more about the relationship between beet juice and brain health.
Beetroot is a source of betalian phytonutrients, which helps lower blood pressure, increase sexual performance and fight inflammation, thanks to its very good antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties.
